Values, Vision & Mission
We’re so glad you’re looking at coming to St Matthew’s. No matter whether you’re investigating Christianity and Jesus Christ, or have been His follower for years, you’re in the right place.
We are a church of people who are gripped by the love of God in Christ. As the apostle Paul said
‘For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one (Jesus) died for all, and therefore all died, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again.’
2 Corinthians 5:14-15
So this is our prayer for ourselves as St Matthew’s church.
We ask God to grow us as people gripped by His love in Christ. And that we would live as Jesus’ followers so:
Strangers to God’s love become
Believers in Christ;
Believers become Lovers of God;
and
Lovers become Warriors for Jesus.
Our invitiation to you is to join us. Come and be gripped by God’s love in Christ. Be part of God’s plan for Canberra, and the world, taking your place in calling others to trust christ, love Him in 24/7 living to honour God, and standing for Jesus in every part of life. Here’s how you can belong to St Matthew’s and be part of that with us.
Church Services
These are our large group meetings. Everybody is welcome. We sing God’s praises, pray to Him, hear His Word read and taught, and seek to encourage one another before and after the service. You’ll find elements of the Anglican tradition together with contemporary expression. These include creeds, confessions, prayers and time-honoured hymns. You can find more information about when our services are run here.
Leadership
St Matthew’s is a part of the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn. Our beliefs are summed up in the 39 Articles of Religion. St Matthew’s is led by Senior Minister Ian Powell, together with the staff team. Alongside Ian’s leadership of Christ’s mission, our Parish Council is responsible for governance and ministry support. You can find out more information about out staff team here
Next Steps
Our goal is to help each person take the next best step. That means if you are seeking to find out about Christ, or need a refresher, the next best step for you will be joining the Simply Christianity group. If you are already a believer in Christ, the next best step will be to attend Belonging.
This is an opportunity to meet others new to St Matthew’s, hear from some of our ministers, and learn about who we are as a church and what we believe. Belonging is a great step to take before joining a Life Group. Please contact the office if you would like further information about dates for these courses.

Thank you for giving to St Matthew’s. Our strong preference is for direct deposits, as we receive exactly the amount you give. However, we can also accept gifts via credit card through the button below. Please note however that a fee of 1.9% + 30c apply, such that if you give $100 St Matts receives $97.80. There is an option to ‘cover the fees’ which you can consider (this increases your giving by the fee amount, such that you would give $102.24 and St Matts would receive $100).

St Matthew’s uses the software platform provider Elvanto to store parishioners’ personal information, including names and contact details. This information is stored on a server located in Australia and is handled by Elvanto in compliance with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988. We book events through an Australian-based company named TryBooking, and use the Sydney office of an American-based company Tithe.ly to process credit card donations to St Matthew’s. Both TryBooking and Tithe.ly use an American-based secure online payment system named Stripe to process your donations and event payments. Stripe’s subcontracted service providers are predominantly located in the European Union and the USA. Parish Council is reasonably satisfied that Elvanto, TryBooking, Tithe.ly and Stripe have adequate privacy protection policies and that appropriate privacy protection laws apply in the countries in which your personal information may be transmitted.
